This blog was only created to demonstrate to a group of interested individuals how easy it would be for them to manage a blog about consulting in ESL. This interest resulted from a series of discussions on the TESL_JB list. I only intended it to be handed over to them, but nothing ever happened since then.

I have worked as a consultant on the side since 1999.

The US State Department, USAID and individual schools have a variety of ways to identify and recruit consultants. The State Department has a website where interested individuals can post their resumes: http://exchanges.state.gov/education/engteaching/specialists.htm

This has never been a full time job for me (since I already have one) and has rarely resulted from seeking out opportunities. My experience has been similar to that of Kenton Sutherland in that it has evolved as an extension of my professional connections and experiences. Presenting at conferences and getting involved in volunteering for professional organizations seems to help a lot.

Since CALL is my area of specialty,this work tends to focus on setting up language computer labs and preparing teachers to use them. I would be interested to see what kind of consulting others are (or have been) doing.
